WARRENS LANDING

For the last couple of days, it was only Steve and Uncle Zach staying at the house. Everyone else was back in Columbus for family and school obligations except for Jessica who was in Switzerland at a private school for six months.

Steve had asked Chris if the wine racks on one side of the cellar were sturdy enough to start stocking some wines. He had three cases they brought back from the New York Finger Lakes District and four other cases that had been shipped to him by Bill Heifner, which were all French Bordeaux. Chris explained that the racks were totally secure and maybe he and Steve could rack them together.

Later on in the afternoon Steve brought down the cases of wine that were still up off the back entry of the kitchen. Chris suggested one section for the New York whites and an area for the reds. Then another section dedicated to the Bordeaux and one area for California whites and reds and so forth as he began to build his inventory.

Steve and Chris set about the task of getting the wines in place. Steve asked, “When are going to finish that one section over by the coal chute?”

Chris, trying to think fast about the delay, told Steve, “Well while you were gone I ran the hose several times around the outer upper lawn area of the chute. I just want to make sure if you have a long, heavy downpour that the chute will stay dry. You don’t want to have water running into it. If it sits and collects in a pool on the bottom of the shaft it could possibly become an uncontrollable mold source. If that happens, it could cause a huge problem. It will become a real mess and the whole section would have to be torn out and rebuilt again as mold, just like rust, never dies. I’ve been watching to make sure that it is water tight.”

They put the New York State wines away. They were mostly whites with a few bottles of rose. Steve loved the way it looked on the racks. Then they broke out the French wines Steve’s friend, Bill Heifner, had shipped from Ohio. Bill loved Bordeaux wines. He had a cellar with over forty cases back in Ohio. Several times, after having dinner at Bill’s home, he and Steve would head down to the cellar, break out a bottle of wine and light up a couple of cigars. Steve kept telling Bill that someday he would have his own cellar.

“How many bottles do you think this will hold when it’s finished?” Steve asked.

Chris told Steve, “I figure at least two hundred cases. Maybe put a nice table with four chairs right there in the center. This space has plenty of room.”

As they were putting the wines on the racks, Chris shared with Steve his knowledge of French wines. Explaining all sorts of stories about different chateaus. He pulled out one of the bottles of Chateau
